Summary:

On 2 September 2026, China Energy Engineering Corporation was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the Noor Midelt I solar complex in Morocco’s Midelt Province.  

The project will comprise approximately 630 MWp of photovoltaic capacity and nearly 1,300 MWh of battery storage. It is expected to be the largest solar plus storage installation on a single site in Africa. The project was initially designed to combine photovoltaic generation with concentrated solar power before being revised to use battery storage. 

Outlook: 

Noor Midelt I is likely to strengthen Morocco’s position as one of Africa’s most developed renewable energy markets, particularly as the country moves toward larger and more sophisticated power projects.  

This trajectory suggests that renewable energy is becoming a more established component of Morocco’s long-term electricity strategy rather than a parallel addition to the existing system. 

The growing involvement of Chinese companies also reflects Morocco’s willingness to draw on a wider range of international partners as its energy ambitions expand. These developments point to Morocco building a more diversified and increasingly mature renewable energy sector over the coming years.
